There is no shortage of apps fo your phone: sometimes it feels like too much of a good thing. For solar panel systems we already have two: one from Zonnefabriek, in which you can get a general picture of your yield, plus your installation and warranty information. Plus you can also bring in new customers and receive a nice compensation from us if you do! In addition, the manufacturers of the inverters have their own apps in which you can find more detailed (technical) information about your system. For SMA, that app is called the ‘SMA Energy app’, which offers much more than just the production of the solar panels. Since not all the possibilities of the app are immediately noticeable, we'd like to explain the different menus to you.
Logging in on the app
Hopefully you have done this before, but if not: click on the app and log in with your email and password combination. These are the same as for Sunny Portal or ennexOS. Forgotten your password? Don't worry, it happens to everyone: follow these steps to create a new password.
Once logged in, the first screen you'll see is the 'Dashboard'. This is where you can see the current production of the solar panels. If you also have a Sunny Home Manager in the system, you will see the current consumption of the home and the exchange of power with the grid (consumption or feed-in) in addition to the current generation. And if, in addition to solar panels, you also have home batteries in your home, you will also see how much power is flowing into or out of those batteries.
Dashboard of the SMA Energy app: left a plant with Home Manager and batteries, right a simple plant without Home Manager
Scrolling down takes you to the ‘Energy balance & forecast’. For systems without Home Manager, you will see the yield over the day here; for systems with Home Manager, you will see the consumption in addition to the generation. This graph is about the current day, from midnight to midnight; for the hours yet to come, an estimate of the generation is given based on the weather forecast. Clicking on 'Yesterday' gives the data from yesterday, clicking on 'tomorrow' gives a prediction of tomorrow's generation, based on the weather forecast. If there is a Home Manager in the system, you will see the expected consumption for the following day in addition to the predicted generation.
On the left, today's generation and consumption; on the right, tomorrow's forecast. Consumption is only shown if a Home Manager is present in the system
Going back in time
You can also look back at the past: if you want to go back further than just yesterday, click on the 'history' icon at the bottom of the screen. This will allow you to see the generation and possibly (if a Home Manager is present) the consumption and the grid consumption per day, month, year or total. You can recall a specific day or month or year from the past by clicking on the date and then adjusting it.
Under 'History' you can select any day, month or year from the past to view the yield of that day, month or year (click on the blue date and scroll to the period you are looking for)
Loads
If you have linked certain consumers to the Sunny Home Manager in your home, you will see an icon for ‘loads’ in the bottom bar. These are, for example, a heat pump, a washing machine or a boiler that can be controlled and read by the Home Manager via a smart socket.
If the loads are ‘switchable’, you can switch them on and off via this page, or you can leave this switching on and off to the Sunny Home Manager: in that case, the word ‘automatic’ is displayed next to the load. Clicking on the load takes you to a page where you can call up the ‘load statistics’. This shows how much energy the load has consumed, and what percentage of that energy came from the solar panels. You can return to the overview page by clicking on ‘Dashboard’ at the bottom left.
If loads have been added, you can switch them on and off here and see how much energy they have used in a certain period
E-mobility
If you are the lucky owner of an SMA charger for electric vehicles, you are probably already familiar with the SMA Energy app. At the bottom of the page you will find the icon for ‘E-Mobility’. Via this page you can select the ‘charging mode’ of the charging station, as described on our FAQ page for the SMA EV charger or for the newer SMA eCharger. You can also read the consumption statistics of your charging station here. In addition, we can also fill in how much energy your car uses. For most electric cars this is around 15 to 17 kWh per 100 km. Once you have filled this in, you can use it for the option ‘charging with target’.
The E-mobility option only appears if there is an SMA charging station in your installation. By clicking on 'settings' (left) you will arrive at the place where you can enter the energy consumption (right, click on the icon of the pen).
Other settings, logbook and QR code scanner
At the bottom right there is the icon for what's called ‘my area’. Here you can enter the electricity rates for consumption and feed-in in € per kWh. At the moment this is only a fixed rate, but in the second half of 2025 you will also be able to choose dynamic electricity rates.
A little further down you will find the QR code scanner under ‘Quick access to devices’: this is useful if you want to log in to the inverter, for example to change a WiFi password. Just point the scanner at the QR code stuck on the inverter (if there is one: not all models have them!), and then you will automatically end up on the login screen.
Here you can also find a link to the installation logbook with all event and error messages in the system.
Under 'My area' you will find the link to 'installation logbook'. Here you can find event and error messages.
To wrap things up: if you do not have one, but multiple SMA plants, you can easily navigate from one to the other via the Dashboard page. Click on the down arrow on the dashboard, as in the image below (top left): a list of your other plants will appear.
If you have multiple plants on Sunny Portal, you can navigate from one to the other by clicking on the arrow on the overview page (indicated here in the red circle): a list of plants appears (right)
We hope this overview helps to clarify how to use the SMA Energy app. Any questions? Send them to service@zonnefabriek.nl or check the FAQ.
